Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots made of titanium or another durable metal. A connector, or abutment, attaches to the top of the dental implant and a crown or other prosthetic tooth replacement sits on top.

Dental implants mimic the appearance of your natural teeth. They’re also much tougher and longer-lasting than traditional tooth replacement options like dentures and bridges.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants present a number of benefits. In addition to replacing your missing teeth, they also:

  • Improve your appearance
  • Make speaking easier
  • Make chewing easier
  • Prevent gum disease

Dental implants are also convenient. Because they’re affixed to your jawbone, you don’t have to worry about removing them or using denture adhesives to keep them in place.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Most people can benefit from dental implants, but you need to have healthy gums and teeth. For example, if you have gum disease, your dentist may recommend holding off on implants until the infection heals.

It’s also important to let your dentist know if you’re living with a chronic condition like heart disease or diabetes. These ailments won’t necessarily disqualify you from receiving dental implants, but they can increase your risk of complications during treatment. You should also let your dentist know if you smoke cigarettes or use chewing tobacco.

What is the process of getting dental implants?

From start to finish, the process of getting dental implants typically takes between six months and one year. Although this may seem like a long period of time, it’s important to remember that with proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime.

At your first appointment, your Nu Dimensions Dental provider performs a thorough oral exam, reviews your medical history, and discusses your aesthetic goals for treatment. If your teeth and gums are healthy, the team takes a series of X-rays to get a better look at your jawbone and formulate a treatment plan that aligns with your needs.

Next, your dentist administers a local anesthetic, numbing your teeth and gums. After the anesthesia sets in, your dentist places your tooth root implants, which are small posts of titanium. After placing your implants, your dentist provides you with a list of recovery instructions and sends you home. You return for your second appointment 6-12 weeks later, after your implants finish healing.

At your second appointment, your Nu Dimensions Dental provider attaches an abutment to each implant and takes impressions of your teeth. Afterward, your dentist sends the impressions to a laboratory which manufactures your prosthetic tooth replacement that looks and function like your natural teeth.

At your third and final appointment, your dentist attaches your permanent restoration to the abutments, restoring your smile to its near original condition. The process usually takes no more than 45 minutes.

If one or more missing teeth have a negative impact on your confidence or self-esteem, dental implants can help. Make an appointment at Nu Dimensions Dental today by calling or clicking the online booking tool.
